Vaccinations

At Raffles Medical, we offer a wide range of vaccinations for children, adults, and *corporate employees.

Over the last few decades, immunization has significantly reduced mortality from deadly and dangerous diseases. It is estimated that vaccines prevent up to 6 million deaths globally each year. (“Immunization” 2019)

When a certain proportion of a population becomes susceptible to a specific contagious disease, it spreads.  However, by vaccinating, you can help build herd immunity, which occurs when a significant percentage of a community becomes immune to the disease, thereby drastically reducing person-to-person transmission and even eliminating it in the future. Vaccination is undoubtedly one of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your children, and future generations against infectious diseases.

When a large part of a community becomes immune to a disease, disease spread from person to person becomes unlikely. Vaccination strengthens your immune system by teaching it to recognize and combat specific germs so that if you come across them again, your immune system will promptly produce antibodies to destroy them.

Vaccines are beneficial for a variety of reasons.

You can prevent the spreading of a disease

When you get vaccinated, you help yourself and others by reducing the likelihood of contracting and spreading the disease. Those who are vulnerable and cannot be vaccinated, such as newborn babies, as well as those with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions, are particularly vulnerable. Therefore, you are essentially protecting your loved ones and those most susceptible by being vaccinated.

You can protect yourself from falling ill

With increasing stress, work pressure, and responsibilities, you simply cannot afford to fall sick.

Depending on your age, job, lifestyle, or existing health conditions, you could be at a higher risk of certain diseases. So, why get sick from diseases that can be easily avoided with vaccines? Vaccines can help you avoid hospitalization and health complications.

A complete vaccination schedule is recommended to protect against serious infections such as shingles, pneumococcal disease, influenza, and cancer-causing diseases like HPV and Hepatitis B.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection, which stands for human papillomavirus. It can cause cervical cancer in women, penile cancer in men, genital warts, and oropharyngeal cancers in both women and men. In fact, most women who are sexually active have higher chances of getting HPV at some point in their lives with no indication of symptoms, which is why regular screening is essential as a preventive measure.

Pneumococcal diseases cause various issues, including ear infections, pneumonia, heart problems, and meningitis. Pneumococcal (PCV) vaccination is recommended for all children under the age of two and all adults aged 65 and older. In some cases, older children and adults should also receive pneumococcal vaccines.

Shingles is known to cause severe and painful skin rash and is often common in older people, adults aged 60 and above. The virus responsible for Shingles is the same as for Chickenpox. It lies dormant in the body after a person recovers from Chickenpox until years later when it reactivates and causes Shingles. Some of the complications that arise from the disease include a painful rash that forms blisters and scabs on one side of the face or body, a headache, fever, and an upset stomach.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a more contagious and severe respiratory disease than the common cold. Everyone over the age of 65, pregnant women at all stages, people suffering from chronic conditions like heart diseases and asthma, and those with compromised immunity need the vaccine. It is best to get vaccinated to avoid getting the flu.

Hepatitis, especially A and B are quite prevalent all over the world and are serious diseases that can result in impaired liver function and a variety of health issues. Chronic hepatitis, if left untreated, increases the risk of developing cirrhosis, a condition that causes permanent scarring in the liver, liver failure, and, eventually, liver cancer. Aside from good hygiene, vaccination against hepatitis is strongly advised.

Although serious allergic reactions to vaccines are rare, health professionals administering the vaccines are trained to identify and treat the symptoms.

You want to stay healthy during travel

It takes so much planning and effort for a successful holiday. You could also be more prone to diseases when travelling to remote areas or foreign destinations. And just like travel insurance, it makes all the more sense to safeguard your health and secure your holiday by getting the necessary vaccinations.

You may be unaware that vaccines are required throughout adult life. Some childhood vaccines may lose their effectiveness over time. Clearly, vaccines are critical to your health.
